Art in the Storefront Presents: Lynnette Shelley

The Ambler artist portrays mixed-media interpretations of animals, folklore and mythology.

Lynnette Shelley will be the featured artist at the Art in the Storefront, starting May 16 and lasting until July 11.

An opening reception for Shelley will take place May 17, from 5:30 – 7 p.m., at the Art in the Storefront outdoor exhibit, located at 41 E. Butler Ave. in Ambler.

Shelley, who moved to Ambler in 2010, said she appreciates the Art in the Storefront’s community-based arts initiative, whose storefront art installations provide art patrons and passersby the opportunity to see new art.

“I do like how Art in the Storefront brings art out on the street for everyone,” Shelley said in an e-mail. “I think it’s a great idea that I would like more empty storefronts in town to emulate.”

Shelley noted that the outdoor art gallery must be popular with both the public and artists alike, as she had been put on a waiting list for over two years to get the show. She will also display her work in the Ambler Art Festival in June, and has asked to have her display in front of her installation at the Art in the Storefront.

As a professional artist, Shelley has kept herself busy. According to her website, www.lynnetteshelley.com, prior to her solo exhibition at the Art in the Storefront in May, she will show at four different events in April alone; the next of which takes place April 6 – May 18 at the Petroleum Paradox group exhibition, at the Narrows Center for the Arts, located in Massachusetts.

While she is still considering what pieces she will include with her Art in the Storefront show, it will likely consist of work she describes as, “contemporary miexed-media interpretations of animals, folklore and mythology.”

“I am intrigued by world culture and ethnic arts of various countries, and I like to use those influences in a more modern way,” Shelley said. “In particular, I am interested in archetypes and using animals as symbolic elements.”
