Community, Local Officials Gather to Dedicate Plaque to Mary Ambler

The plaque ensures the legacy of Mary Ambler lives on.

On Saturday, July 17, local officials and the community came together to dedicate a plaque at the Ambler Train Station in the name of Mary Ambler.

“We honor those who are not here with us and recognize those here with us,” said Pat Thomas, dressed as Mary Ambler for the event.

The plaque serves as a record of the tragic train accident that happened on the site 155 years ago, and Mary Ambler’s leadership and nursing skills that saved many lives.

Jeff Knueppel, SEPTA Assistant General Manager and Chief Engineer, said SEPTA has a very special relationship with Ambler and is “dedicated to serving customers [where] they live and work.”

The renovated Ambler train station improves customer service, and brings new growth to the residents and business owners in the community, said Knueppel.

“It's certainly a step up from the last station we had here,” he added.

Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz said a big investment was made in transportation in the stimulus, and Pennsylvania received billions of dollars in federal funds for transportation projects.

“Right here in Montgomery County … [transportation is an important aspect] to build on,” she said. “I’m happy to see this plaque here.”

Todd Stephens said SEPTA provides a valuable service “to those who ride and those who don’t.”

“[My wife loves] the new layout and design and new commuter friendly [design of the Ambler station],” he added.

The plaque will be hanging inside the commuter building at the Ambler train station, honoring Mary Ambler and telling the story of the train wreck that happened July 17, 1856.

The Ambler station is part of the Lansdale/Doylestown Regional Rail Line.
