News Next Door: Rabid Raccoon in Wissahickon
Bit a visitor to Wissahickon Valley Park
The non-profit group Friends of the Wissahickon reported on their Facebook page this afternoon that a raccoon captured near the Valley Green Inn along the Wissahickon Creek after biting a Fairmount Park visitor has tested positive for rabies.
The Wissahickon Creek runs through portions of Upper Gwynedd, Lower Gwynedd, Whitpain, Ambler, Upper Dublin, Whitemarsh, and Springfield before entering Philadelphia and eventually emptying into the Schuylkill River near City Line Avenue.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) advises keeping pets vaccinated against rabies and avoiding direct contact with raccoons and other wild animals that could harbor the rabies virus. Avoid unintentionally attracting wild animals with open garbage cans or litter.
