Whitpain Police Officer Terminated Following DUI Arrest
Gerald Schwartz, 46, of Philadelphia, was relieved of duty by the Whitpain Board of Supervisors on Tuesday night.
Facing a formal arraignment in March on charges of driving under the influence, driving under influence of a controlled substance and harassment, Whitpain Township Police officer Gerald Schwartz was relieved of his duty following the unanimous approval of a settlement and release agreement by the Whitpain Board of Supervisors on Tuesday night.
The board, which only identified the officer as "Badge #24," declined to comment on the termination and refused to hear public comment, but a source within the law enforcement community confirmed to Patch that the badge number belonged to Schwartz.
The charges stem from an August 27 incident in Whitemarsh Township, in which the Whitemarsh Police Department allege that Schwartz was driving under the influence and had physically harassed his wife following a dispute in a local bar.
According to published reports, the dispute between Schwartz and his wife continued as he drove his yellow Dodge Charger away from the bar. Schwartz eventually pulled his vehicle over along the 500 block of Bethlehem Pike, and which point his wife fled the vehicle and dialed 9-1-1.
When officers from the Whitemarsh Police Department arrived to the scene, they described Schwartz as being visibly intoxicated, and a blood test would later show that Schwartz had trace amounts of oxycodone in his blood stream, as well as a blood-alcohol content of .26 percent, which is more than three-times the legal limit in Pennsylvania.
Schwartz was ordered to stand trial by District Court Judge Deborah Lukens at a preliminary hearing in January, and his formal arraignment at the Montgomery County Courthouse is scheduled for March 14 at 9:30 a.m., according to county records.
Schwartz is currently free on $2,000 unsecured bail.

It is absolutely ridiculas how people can put someones life and there buisness out to the public. I believe that everybody makes mistakes and that nobody is perfect. This is a horrible thing to be done. A person makes one mistake and is now judged by that one mistake and is forgotten for all the good he has served. He truly made a difference in Whitpain township and never did anything to harm anybody. He was always a sweet loving person who only wanted to help people and now he is being punished in the worst way. unacceptable!!! -Faith

This is unbelievable! This officer has done so much for his work, and it's pathetic how you would make someone's life so horrible for doing one mistake. Are you human? Humans make mistakes, no one is perfect, and we are on this earth to MAKE mistakes, but it's very sad to see one of the best officers let go. The township will never be as good and protective now that Officer Gerald Schwartz is let go.

Law enforcement is a very difficult job that not just anybody can do. It takes a special skill set and proper mental attitude. Our township supervisors hold the enormous responsibility to carefully select those sufficiently trained to protect our community and the supervisors have the elected duty to re-evaluate their selections as need be, since it is up to them to give a person a badge and a lethal weapon. The supervisors are ultimately responsible for the safety of the community.

Exactly you dont know him thats the problem he never harassed anyone it was a false accusation and his wife is right behind him they had a bad night noone is perfect and to "Big Jon"and everyone else who has negative things to say I think you should definatly look into the other officers whos been in deeper things than this but there cases were thrown away mmm i wonder why. I have been to parties with several Whitpain officers personally and they leave the parties TRASHED.Its just so sad that people ENVY Jerrys life and his hard work they did everything possibe to take it away.Well We know the real officers who have done so much for this township and country and there are only a very few left

This is Heather I am one of of Jerrrys 4 daughters. This article makes my dad sound like a monster this is completly wrong and I dont understand why when the media gets a hold of something they blow it up. My dad NEVER HARRASSED anyone especially the women he is love with and is married too. This is not true I was with them hours after this all happened and it was a little argument that got blown out of proportion and anyone that truely knows my dad knows he would NEVER EVER hurt or disrespect anyone, he does not stand for that behavior himself. My dad has been on the police force for 26 1/2 years and has done more than most people do in a lifetime. I just wish the people making this decision actually took a few minutes to get to know the real him and all the things he has done for this township. My dad is the one the put township on the map he started the truck stops he has dont the motorcycle traning, the SWAT team, he has won so many awards I can not even tell you. My dad did not deserve this but maybe it happened for the better and he will go further and continue bettering himself. No one actually realizes though how this effects not jus him but all of us his children our family. Our mother is paralyzed and has several medical problems my dad is the only one that supports us and takes care of us and now you took his job away, I mean people really should have looked into this more because they just let go one of the BEST officers in Whitpain township

I am Officer Schwartz' oldest daughter, Amanda. I believe this is outrageous. Officer Schwartz has gone well above and beyond any average officer. He has been a member of the SWAT Team and CMCERT. He was the first to conduct truck inspections and anyone who is doing them now was trained by him. He trained many how to ride motorcycles. He participated in police bike shows in philadelphia for many years. He went to NYC, with no sleep for days, when the 9/11 attacks happened to find people in the fallen buildings. Anytime the president ever came to our area, he was the one who escorted him to his destination. I know for a fact, men from the WTPD are full of jealousy and envy towards my DAD. That's why they DID NOT thoroughly think their desicion about this. He did harrass anyone, especially his own wife. My DAD has four daughters and does not except any violence towards women. I'm sure they know this about him being that he has been an officer for about 26 years. My Dad does not deserve this by no means. He made one mistake but it shouldn't have to change his entire life. THEY made the mistake of letting go of their BEST officer of ALL TIME. DAD I LOVE YOU MORE THAN YOU'LL EVER KNOW AND IM SO PROUD OF WHAT YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED IN YOUR CAREER. EVERYTHING WILL GET BETTER...AND IM SURE ALL MY SISTERS FEEL THE SAME WAY. YOUR DAUGHTERS-AMANDA, HEATHER, FAITH, AND KERRI; YOUR GRANDKIDS-ANGEL, DESTINY, AND ALAYSIA...YOUR BIGGEST, PROUDEST FANS!!! LOVE YOU DAD!!!

We appreciate this but it really was not looked in to at all there are many peices missing. People are prescribed medication by their Doctors for different issues it does not mean they are abusing them. There is alot I could write on how it wasnt looked in to enough but I am not going to write his business on here. I just wish people who made this decision looked into it a little more, and how it can be justified to taxpayers would be remembering all the things that he has done and has been through and has seen, when you see people dead or babies suffocated and going into to dark houses at night not knowing if theres someone on the other side of the door about to kill you, you do have bad memories just because my dad is a cop he is not a robot and should not be treated as one. If everyone thought he had such a problem because he was parked in a parking lot under the influence then instead of ignoring the "problem" and trying to take his job away why not care about him and put him in a program to help him? People are selfish he has cared for Whitpain towship for 24years and now he does one thing and now instead of caring for him and seeing him get better you ignore the "problem".WHAT A GREAT TOWNSHIP people want him to help them when they need it but when he apparently needs it he gets (excuse my language) shitted on.

Officer Gerald Schwartz is an awesome person and officer, we should be looking at who he is as an officer what happened off duty happened pff duty the other officers know they have done the same thing if not worse, why is Officer SChwartz the only officer being penalized i say the whole Whitpain police department gets drug tested and investigated throughly! Lets all come together and protest for Officer Schwartz and his family, this is wrong he has helped my family when on duty I have lived here for 7 years and know that Officer Schwartz is a dedicated respectful officer

I agree I would like to know answers too, I have tried to attend a meeting there before as well as contacting the "cheif" through phone calls an showing up and asking to speak with him and he continues to ignore me ( I have been trying for months) which is very frustrating since he is supposed to be the Chief. They delt with this in a very poor manner. I am not bashing any officers on here I know they all have problems regardless if they get theirs covered up or not no one is perfect and they should all realize that.

i just hope everyone gets the justice they desrve and the posts that were deleated including mine were not being ingnored and they do look into the accusations on other officers as well. anybody can make accusations on anybody only evidence will matter so step fowaerd to the correct personal and tell him what you got face to face if its the truth. i do feel bad for gerald with such great acheivments n accomplishments hes put into the department for the last 26years his daughter claims, if so i think they should reconsider their decision n also look into it further like the gentleman states above with it being illegal for first time offenses help should be offerd first like they do for regular civilians.

I truly think it is ridiculous to expose people through the media like this. If the officer was drinking then they can be settled with his superiors. I find it so sad that we feed into the media and negativity and are in such a need for a scandal. I may not agree with his actions (if what is stated is the truth) but we all make mistakes and instead of bringing our community and people in it down we should be working to build each other up.

Officer Schwartz has been serving the community for 26 1/2 years and this is his first offence. Everyone makes mistakes, there is not one person out there who has not done something they regret. If anyone cares to read more about the kind of person Gerald really is you might want to look up other articles about him that are still available on the internet, AND all the local MontgomeryCounty news papers including "The Times Herald". He also volunteered his service for many community events including assisting with the search and rescue mission after the 9/11 attack in NYC, documented with an interview by George Stephanopolis and Peter Jennings (available on Utube). There are countless accomodations and thank you letters he had received for his outstanding work for the people in the community.
THANK YOU GERALD SCHWARTZ FOR ALL OF THE YEARS YOU DEVOTED YOUR LIFE TO HELPING OTHERS
To the reporters who write these articles for the newspapers, please do some investigating yourself before you post slanderous and incorrect information. Make sure the person or people you received the story from is credible and is not trying to cover up anything on themselves.

Has anyone bothered to ask the amount of alchol and drugs were ingested by the woman who called 911? I think she must have been over the limit more so since she didn't even know where she was. Why didn't she take to keys and drive? Why did she get into the car in the first place if she thought she might be endangered? She must really be brainless or maybe she was trying to set him up. We haven't heard anything from her. I feel bad for the officer who I know is a decent guy and by all of the positive things written about him. Yet we heard nothing from the bimbo.
