The History of Shoes

The history of shoes date back to the ancient times.

Comfortable and cultural are only two of the many words that describe shoes. Shoe history stretches back to the ancient times. Back then, sandals were formal wear shoes and they have the revered distinction of being the first footwear. In the ancient world, everyone wore sandals (no, not flip flops!) to funerals. Some shoes are truly protective like sabatons, the Renaissance era metal foot coverings that completed suits of armor, circa 1500. Other shoes like those worn by Asian women in the 1600s were binding. European fashionistas selected the finest fabrics for their footwear and made the boot a mainstay in the 18th Century. The Industrial Revolution ushered in work shoes as the 1800s morphed into the 1900s.  In the early years of the …

New Technology Impacts Old Furniture Market

Armoires are the most common pieces of antique furniture.

One of the most common pieces of antique furniture is the armoire or as it is called in Europe, the linen cupboard. They are beautiful storage pieces that have enjoyed a major place in the world’s homes since before the advent of the closet. Armoires have a varied history and have served as wooden storage lockers for everything from coats to coverlets since the age of the Renaissance. Today, many people are sad to learn that one of their most beloved pieces of furniture is not worth as much as it once was. For instance, many antiques lovers purchased large scale armoires for big bucks in the 1990s, intended to use the piece in a bedroom. Many owners purchased armoires to hide an oversized tv set behind wooden doors.  Now, the technological…

Take This Arts Survey Now!

Got 10 minutes? AMS Planning and Research asks potential users of the 311 W. Main arts center to take a brief anonymous survey to find out their wants and needs - and you can win prizes too

It was revealed Wednesday night at the 311 W. Main Task Force meeting that the primary market for successful potential users of the future Lansdale arts and entertainment center is within a 15-minute commute from the borough's downtown. That's the radius where AMS Planning and Research Corp., the Connecticut firm hired by the task force as its consultant, will focus its market analysis for the renovation and programming of the former Masonic temple on Lansdale's Main Street into a community arts and entertainment mecca. But the firm cannot rely on that analysis alone -- an analysis that relies heavily on The Nielsen Company's PRIZM model, a geo-demographic market segmentation for the suburban Lansdale area. (Nielsen is the same company …

Ambler Theater Unveils Hollywood Summer Nights

The film schedule for summer 2012 includes a healthy dose of Bond and Hitchcock, plus the ever-popular Python Fest.

The Ambler Theater has the recipe for hot summer nights - just add Hollywood. Ambler's independent theater on Thursday unveiled its 2012 Hollywood Summer Nights schedule. The program includes two types of films, Hollywood Classics and After Dark, the theater's special events manager, Chris Collier, said on the theater's blog. "The Hollywood Classics are your Golden Age of Hollywood fare and are family friendly," Collier wrote, adding, "In fact, we encourage you to bring your family – all of our Hollywood Classics are free for ages 18 and under. "The After Dark series is a bit more gritty and probably not for everyone, but we still wanted to see these films back up on the big screen." As usual, dress in theme for the movie and the popcorn …

Jewelry Tips for the Novice

Some tips on buying jewelry...so you don't sound cheap.

I have heard many men, at various venues across the country, report that they don’t buy jewelry for their wives or girlfriends because they don’t know enough about jewelry to make an informed decision. I have had my fair share of cheap boyfriends and let me just tell you what most women think of that lame excuse—you sound cheap. So, in order to educate the masses and help all of my girlfriends get gifts of fine bling, here are some tips about jewelry. If you are interested in purchasing a colored gemstone, diamond, or strand of pearls, a jeweler with a GIA certification and a strong, honest reputation in the community is your best ally. If you are just starting out or your girlfriend is not buying your excuses anymore, here are some things…

Economy sparks need for Art and Antique Insurance

Demand for private art insurance has risen recently.

On the international scene, the demand for private art insurance has risen sharply recently. According to AXA Art, a subsidiary of one of the world's leading insurers, the world-wide art market generates about $5.4 billion in annual premiums. However, growth rates are relatively high as the market advances by about 8% every year. That statistic is almost double the rate of the traditional insurance market which grows by about 4% every year. How does this news affect you? The main reasons for the sharp rise and interest in buying art insurance has been mainly credited to art owners’ increased belief that they have a real need for specified fine art and antiques insurance coverage. In the wake of the growing number of high profile and recent…

Holy Friggatriskaidekaphobia, Batman

A look at the superstition behind Friday the 13th

Friggatriskaidekaphobics are surely hiding behind closed doors (unless they are claustrophobics too), avoiding black cats, mirrors and salt today. According to the website The Unexplained Mysteries, the fear of Friday the 13th is called friggatriskaidekaphobia. Frigga, meaning "Friday," and triskaidekaphobia, or paraskevidekatriaphobia, derived from the Greek words "Paraskevi" (Friday) and "dekatreis" (thirteen). The word was derived in 1911 and appeared in a mainstream source in 1953, according to the site. Today is the second Friday the 13th this year. We had one in January and we'll see another one in July. Sadly - and surely a disgrace for horror buffs - no Jason Voorhees marathons on anywhere on TV. It's not like the old days. There …

Smart Springtime Clean Up

When the easiest thing is to throw it out, think again.

I am a firm believer in the ritual of spring cleaning. When it comes to the seasonal clean up, many people believe that the easiest thing to do is to just throw everything away. However, that’s not always smart. On a regular basis, I visit homes of people who are downsizing or people who are cleaning out the home of a deceased loved one. I help evaluate what objects are worth keeping, what objects are worth selling, and I show people the smartest way to get the most money for unwanted objects—both new and old. I remind folks that trashing that unwanted item may cost you. Today, those objects represent the much needed money for rising healthcare costs and other vital needs. Far too many families make uniformed and costly decisions about …

'Hunger Games' Hits Local Theaters

The highly anticipated adaptation of the popular young adult books is finally hitting the big screen.

Based on the popular Young Adult series by author Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games, brings the distopian world of Panem to local cineplexes. Every year, in the ruins of what was once North America, the Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which "Tributes" must fight with one another until one survivor remains. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers in her younger sister's place to enter the games, and is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken …
