Walking for a Cure!

Hi, this marks my first blog (ever) in the journey towards walking the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk in Philadelphia. With 30 days and just under 5 weeks to go, I have started to get physically & mentally prepared. WHOA...can't believe I am doing this for the 3rd time-am I crazy!! This year I am turning my Patch green in for PINK Oct 5-7 and will start out at the Willow Grove Mall and Finish down at The Navy Yard in Philadelphia.

I get asked all the time...what is the 3-Day like? So, I will be blogging my preparation and walk experience so that people can experience it without getting their own blisters and sunburn and hopefully shed some light on a very important cause! Check out the attached flyer to see Why I walk!

The first step--know what you are getting into! All the rumors are true...you actually sleep in a tent (in 3-Day Camp that you put together) each night, shower on a semi-truck (nicer than some hotels I have stayed in) and eat cafeteria style (good food) with thousands of fellow walkers each day.  So, I have to pack shower shoes, prepare my mini travel kit and hope that I remember how to put that darn tent together! But, it's not so bad--as I have come back twice to do it again!

They staff and crew is amazing during the walk! You check your bag and tent each day and they have it ready for you at camp every night. Not only do they do that, but they are also preparing all your food, staffing all the pit stops during the day and getting less sleep than new moms. The walk wouldn't happen without them and someday I hope to have the courage to be a member of the CREW!

The second step--fundraising! Each walker must raise $2300 to participate in the walk. If it seems like a big goal-it is! But, that covers all expenses during the walk and I believe 75% of the proceeds go to Breast Cancer research (I have to double check that). I have been able to raise it both times and very close to my goal for this year. Thank you so much to all of you that are reading this and have supported me thus far and go team Walsh 408!

Stay tuned for more updates & pictures and thanks for reading!

Megan

Shame, Shame, Shame.
Susan G. Komen funds abortions through Planned Parenthood. There are other legitimate ways to support breast cancer research without killing a baby.
Peace be with you.

The money that Susan G. Komen donates to Planned Parenthood goes 100% towards breast cancer screenings. Maybe you should do a little more research before you go off on your next ill-informed and biased remark about something you clearly know nothing about.

Beyond that Bill, do you have a uterus? If not, then this DOES NOT APPLY TO YOU.

Bill - this is not the place for that type of comment-shame on you. This is a blog about a personal journey to walk for the greater good of finding a cure for a terrible disease called Breast Cancer. I am proud to do this event and say that 75% of the money raised by Susan G. Komen goes towards finding a cure! I walk in memory of my Grandmother who died of this disease and if you were a part of this event you would realize how important it is.

Had the Susan G. Komen Foundation stand their ground against Planned Parenthood, it would have resulted in another Chic-Fil-A success in a surge of support because of values. Recall Komen donations were up 100% until Brinker was thrown under the bus. Now they struggle for donations because of how they handled it.

Marc- how much of that "100%" goes toward mammograms?

My grandmother also died of this disease, which puts me further in the trenches fighting for truth. Shame on me too.

And, shame on you again for falling asleep in English class.

No matter how we feel about these organizations, I know we will all be cheering for Megan and Team Walsh 408...

Tom do you really feel the need to bring Tea Party style ignorance and hatred to even the most simple blog post about someone trying to raise money for a charity? Please leave society alone.

I always love the stories of real determination and for a great cause. Have an amazing 3 Day Walk.

And don't worry about the comments of some who can't ever seem to "turn down the volume" on political rhetoric. No one is really listening to them anyway.

Good for you, Megan, for committing your time and energy to a cause you believe in and trying to affect positive change in the world instead of sitting in front of a computer and wagging your finger at others. If more people could do the same we'd all be better off.

You’ve got some interesting points in this article. I would have never considered any of these if I didn’t come across this. Thanks!
