Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association Creates Trail Stewardship Program

Th environmental association begins program on Green Ribbon Trail thanks to grant from REI.

The Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association (WVWA) of Ambler is developing a trail stewardship program thanks to a $9,954 grant from the Conshohocken branch of REI, an outdoor recreation gear and clothing company, according to the Ambler Gazette.

The stewardship program is meant to preserve a 12.6 mile stretch of trail that connects Parkside Place in Upper Gwynedd and Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, which is called the Green Ribbon Trail.

WVWA teamed with REI to apply for the grant award.  The funds will be applied to various projects, including their trail project, for instance, training volunteers to lead walks and care for the trail.  According to WVWA executive director Dennis Miranda, they hope to have the trail stewards out and about by 2014.

“This new initiative will allow the association to improve trail conditions, expand the use of our trails for passive recreation and develop the capacity to respond faster to damage such as downed trees,” Miranda indicated in a statement.

REI gives millions of dollars each year to help conservation efforts, according to www.rei.com.
