Henry "Oh Yeah" Carter, 94, of Penllyn

Henry "Oh Yeah" Carter was born in Penllyn, PA on July 28, 1918 to Hedrick and Delia (Smith) Carter.

Henry was baptized in the early 1930's by the late Rev. Edwards. He graduated from Ambler High School in 1937.

He studied music under Mrs. Marion Gains of Penllyn. 

He became a band leader in 1942 and developed the name Henry "Oh Yeah" Carter in the middle of the 50's.

Henry entertained many clubs, parties, banquets and dances during the 1940's through the 1980's.

Henry was known for his smile and getting down with his music and making people happy.

Henry married Roberta Smith in July 1942. Through this union they were blessed with four children: Henry Jr., Tonya Janet, Kenneth James (Kenn) and Shirley Jean.

In the early 1940's he worked for building contractors for eight years before being hired at Merck, Sharp and Dohme in 1952. Henry retired from MS&D in 1983.

He enjoyed playing for the MS&D Credit Union Banquets and their Family Day affairs.

His band also had the opportunity to play with Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and Harry Belafonte.

On May 8, 2012, Henry was honored with a banquet and dance for his musical contribution to the community by the NAACP Branch of Ambler.

Preceding him in death are his wife Roberta, his brother Ernest, his sister Ann Lewis and one son-in-law George Harvey.

Henry leaves to cherish his memory Henry Jr. of Norristown, Kenn of Penllyn, Tonya Jenkins and Walter of Lansdale, Shirley Harvey of North Wales,

six grandchildren, Bobbi Gonzalez (Edwin), Robert, Rodney (Tara) all of Ambler, Drake and LeVar of Lansdale, and Satina Kihm (Brian) of Sellersville, 

seven great-grandchildren Justice, Deion, Christopher, Meena, Madison, George and Sean, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
