Alleged 2012 Whitpain Giant 'Bomber Robber' Arrested, Charged, Police Say

Robert E. Sickle Jr., 41, of Pulaski Drive, Whitpain, allegedly taped a device resembling a bomb to his waist with electrical tape and displayed it to a cashier before robbing the Giant Food Store on DeKalb Pike in December 2012.

A Blue Bell man, who allegedly threatened employees with a fake bomb during a Dec. 4, 2012 robbery of Giant Food Store in Whitpain Township, has been arrested and charged with crime, police said.
Robert E. Sickle Jr., 41, of the 1800 block of Pulaski Drive, has been charged with robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, recklessly endangerment, terroristic threats and possession of an instrument of crime, according to court records.
Police said Sickle turned himself in Wednesday after an arrest warrant was issued on Tuesday.
Sickle was arraigned before District Judge Robert Sobeck in Blue Bell Wednesday and committed to Montgomery County prison in lieu of $10,000 cash bail, per court records.
Sickle allegedly entered the store on DeKalb Pike at 11:57 p.m., and displayed a device wrapped in electrical tape tied to his waist, police said.
He allegedly ordered a cashier to open the cash register, and then took cash before fleeing the store, police said.
The Abington Police Department's K-9 Unit found the device in the Giant's store driveway, a short distance away from the entrance.
Montgomery Count Sheriffs Department Bomb Squad responded to the scene and determined that the device was not an explosive device.
According to the press release from the Whitpain Police in 2012, Sickle allegedly had adhesive tape across his nose and extending to both of his cheeks. He was also seen wearing sunglasses. He was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and white sneakers, police said.
Whitpain Township Police were assisted in the investigation by the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office.
