Foulkeways Resident Avoids Sweepstakes Scam: Police

Lower Gwynedd Township Police said a man was told he won a $500,000 sweepstakes and was asked to send money to the Philippines.

Lower Gwynedd Township Police said a resident at Foulkeways at Gwynedd was the target of an attempted scam last month.
The resident told police he received a call Nov. 18 at 11 a.m. informing him he had won a sweepstakes for $500,000, police said.
The caller told the man her name was Amanda Bennett from Bennett and Graham and Associates in Boston, MA, police said.
She told the man that the Boston Sweepstakes Corp. was handling the winnings and he was the recipient of a $6,500 check, police said. In order to receive the check, he had to send money via Western Union to JPB Castillo in Manilla, Philippines, police said.
He was asked to send more money to cover future tax purposes, police said.
Officers reached out to an FBI agent on the matter, who informed police that the phone numbers used in the attempted scam re-route to a different country, police said.
Thus, it prevents the FBI from attempting to intercept a scam, police said.
The scammer called the resident again inquiring why he had not sent the money, police said. The resident told the caller that he was busy and would try later.
Police told the resident not to answer the phone or tell the caller he was not going to send the money, police said.
