KYW Newsradio Movie Critic Bill Wine to Teach Movie Review Course at MCCC

Whether it’s a comedy, drama or an action-packed adventure, a great movie leaves an indelible impression upon its audiences. But what exactly makes amovie memorable?

Acclaimed movie critic Bill Wine will be teaching the course, “The Movies: Meanings & Methods (COM 230),” this fall at Montgomery County Community College that will help students discern which elements constitute a great film—and why and how they do so.

This three-credit course will be held Sunday afternoons, 1-4 p.m., from Sept. 9 through Dec. 16, at the College’s Central Campus, Advanced Technology Center room 101, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell.

As part of theCommunications program, the course enables students to improve their technique in constructing and interrelating visual and aural images to produce more effective videos and films for their careers or simply for enjoyment. Anyone interested in film and video may enroll, but class size is limited.

According to Wine, who has been teaching film and writing courses for years at La Salle University, it is important for the class to watch and critique the movies together as a group.

“We will be watching films communally on a large screen, so we can compare reactions and discuss the group’s response, such as why a movie was hard to follow or why it made us laugh,” said Wine, who has been has been KYW Newsradio’s movie critic since 2001.

“We’ll be watching a wide-variety of entertaining movies from the early days to the present, with most of the films from the last 20 to 30 years,” he said. “They will feature all different genres, including thrillers, comedy, horror and drama. The course focuses on movies that entertain, so it will not include documentaries.”

Prior to his position at KYW, Wine served as a movie critic for the Fox Network’s Philadelphia TV station from 1990 to 2002, initially for its evening news and then for its morning program. During that time, he received three Emmy awards and eight Emmy nominations for his writing.
