Centre Square Fire Co. is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a year-long celebration. On May 18, the local Whitpain fire company will hold a 100th anniversary parade, beginning at the corner of Skippack and Penllyn-Blue Bell Pike and ending at the fire house, at 1298 Skippack Pike. The parade will begin at 11 a.m., but Skippack Pike will be shut down to traffic beginning at 10:30 a.m., from Narcissa Rd. to the intersection of Rt. 202/DeKalb Pike. Chief Lee Miller said he expects the parade to last approximately tow hours, but the road will be closed until the parade is complete. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced today the 2013 $2,500 Merit Scholarship winners. There are 8,000 students nationwide who will receive a National Merit Scholarship in 2013, totally $35 million. According to a release, students are selected based on academic record, "scores from two standardized tests, contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the Finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official." Simply Twisted Frozen Yogurt in Blue Bell opens May 8.
Local, family owned frozen yogurt shop, Simply Twisted, will open their second location, at 726 DeKalb Pike in Blue Bell, on May 8. Stephanie Wagner, owner of Simply Twisted, opened the her first location in Horsham on Memorial Day in 2012. She told Patch that the original plan when opening the Horsham location was to open multiple locations. At Simply Twisted, Wagner said they do things al title differently than some of the other frozen yogurt shops around. She explained that they keep their toppings on their "rosetta wall," so all the toppings stay separate. Following critical reports by the New York Commission of Correction (COC) regarding the prison medical care provided by Blue Bell-based Correctional Medical Care Inc. (CMC), the Attorney General of New York has announced that his office has launched an investigation into the deaths of nine inmates over a three-year span. In an article by Steve Reilly at the Ithaca Journal, CMC repeatedly defends the care they provide, but Reilly cites reports by the COC's Medical Review Board which state that CMC had at least "some level of fault" in the deaths of nine inmates. Some reports go as far as recommending county-level inquiries to decide if CMC is fit to provide care, the report states. CMC was founded in May of 2001 by Emre Umar, whom the …

A call to a local bar early Saturday morning resulted in finding a wanted man. Whitpain Police Department was called to P.J. Whelihan's for a man that was reportedly "out of control." According to reports, on April 13, at 1 a.m., police were called to P.J. Whelihan's at 799 Dekalb Pike by a patron who "advised his friend was out of control." When police arrived, they reportedly spoke with Matthew Hoch, 24, of the unit block of Hillside Drive in Pottstown. "As they spoke with him, it was apparent that he was intoxicated and it was learned that there was an active warrant for his arrest from Chester County for a parole violation," said Whitpain Police reports. Hoch was taken into custody and later released to a Chester County Constable.

The Whitpain Township Police Department is seeking public assistance in identifying a man and a woman matching the description of those involved in numerous thefts from Kohl's Department Stores throughout the area. According to a press release, a white male wearing a tan Carhart jacket and jeans entered Kohl's on Skippack Pike at 6:14 p.m. on Friday, April 12. The man walked to the housewares department, where he allegedly grabbed two Kitchen-Aid 600 mixers before exiting the store through a rear fire door. The mixers had a combined value of $1,099.98, the report states.
